The agricultural education is the basis for the development of the
agriculture and it plays an important role in socio-economic development
of our country. Agriculture in India supports seventy percent of the country's
population. Agricultural education is responsible for development of manpower
that can be appropriately utilized for the development of agricultural research,
extension and education in the country.
The agricultural education in India existed even during medieval period.
The subject agriculture was included in the curricula of Nalanda and Taxila
Universities as one of the eighteen Arts courses. However, organised courses
in agricultural education were started in the beginning of 20th century
when 6 agricultural colleges were established at Kanpur, Lyalpur, Coimbatore
and Nagpur in 1906, Puna in 1907 and Sabour(Bihar) in 1908. Before independence
17 agricultural and veterinary colleges were established in the country
under the control of state departments of agriculture and animal husbandry.
Presently there are 30 State Agricultural Universities with about 200 Colleges
and 4 Deemed Universities of ICAR, that are engaged in providing Under Graduate,
Post Graduate and Ph.D. programmes in various disciplines of agriculture
in India.
